  • The right to a trial by a jury of your peers
  • The right to vote in elections
  • The right to apply for federal employment

  • And many more!

What Are The Steps On The Path To Citizenship?

Obtaining citizenship in the U.S. is a complex process, and our Fruit Cove citizenship attorneys are ideally positioned to help you take care of details such as paperwork and interview prep. In order to help you understand the process of citizenship, here is a brief overview of the steps you can anticipate:

  • Qualifications: You can qualify for U.S. citizenship if you were born abroad to parents who are U.S. citizens or naturalized citizens. If these specifications do not apply to you, you can qualify for naturalization if you are 18+ years old and have been married to a U.S. citizen for 3+ years, or if you have been a lawful permanent resident for 5+ years.
  • Paperwork: You must file forms N-600 or Form N-600K if you are seeking citizenship. If you are seeking naturalization, you will need to file form N-400, which is a complex form that requires supporting documentation–remember that mistakes on this form can be costly! Our legal team can help you complete this form so that it is accurate.
  • Background checks: Following a biometrics appointment, you will need to be fingerprinted, photographed, and subjected to a background check. For clients with criminal issues in their past, our immigration lawyers also have a background in criminal law and can explain to you your options.
  • USCIS interview: Your interview is incredibly important and has the potential to jeopardize your citizenship opportunities if you are not prepared! Part of your interview will involve an English and civics test, the passing of which is a requirement. If you fail the test twice, your application can be denied.
  • Oath of Allegiance: If your application is approved, you will attend a naturalization ceremony where you will take the Oath of Allegiance to the U.S., after which you will receive your Certificate of Naturalization! If your application is denied, our attorneys can file Form N-366 with the appropriate fees in order to appeal the decision.
